All-on-6 Dental Implant Recovery: Timeline and Healing Stages

All-on-6 dental implant recovery time

Recovery from All-on-6 dental implants happens in two stages. The gums heal over the first few weeks, while the implants fuse with the jawbone over about three months. Most patients return to light daily activities within a few days, and swelling usually settles within one to two weeks.

This guide walks you through each stage, from the first night to your final bridge.

Key facts

  • Swelling and discomfort peak around day two or three and usually settle within one to two weeks.
  • The gums heal over the first few weeks; the implants fuse with the bone over about three months.
  • A soft diet is needed while the implants heal.
  • Implants heal best without pressure, so Esvita gives temporary teeth for social occasions only.
  • Patients return to Istanbul about three months after surgery for their final bridge.

How Long Does All-on-6 Dental Implant Recovery Take?

Full recovery takes about three months, but you will feel much better long before that.

Initial Healing After Implant Surgery

In the first two weeks, the gums close over and around the implant sites. This is when swelling, bruising and tenderness are most noticeable. Following your aftercare instructions closely during this time helps the gums heal smoothly.

Osseointegration and Long-Term Healing

Beneath the gums, the bone grows around and bonds with each implant. This process, called osseointegration, takes about three months. You will not feel it happening, but it is what gives the implants their long-term strength.

What Happens During the First Week After All-on-6 Surgery?

The first week is the most important part of recovery. Your body is starting to heal, and your habits during these days make a real difference.

Swelling, Bruising and Temporary Discomfort

Swelling usually peaks around day two or three and then fades. Applying cold compresses in 15 to 20 minute intervals during the first 48 hours helps. Take the pain relief and any antibiotics your dentist prescribes, and sleep with your head slightly raised.

Managing Oral Hygiene and Rest

Rest for the first few days and avoid strenuous exercise. Keep the mouth clean with the rinse your dentist recommends, and avoid smoking, alcohol and drinking through a straw, as these can disturb healing.

What Should Patients Expect During the First Month?

By the end of the first month, most patients feel close to normal, although the implants are still integrating beneath the gums.

Gum Healing and Gradual Recovery

Tenderness gradually eases and the gums take on a healthier colour. Any stitches are either dissolvable or removed according to your dentist’s plan.

Returning to Everyday Activities

Most patients return to desk work and light activities within a few days to a week. Wait for your dentist’s advice before returning to intense exercise or contact sports.

How Long Does It Take for All-on-6 Implants to Fully Integrate?

Integration takes about three months for most patients. This is the stage that turns a successful dental implant procedure into a stable, long-lasting foundation.

Understanding Osseointegration

During osseointegration, new bone forms in direct contact with the implant surface. Implants heal best when they are kept free of pressure during this period. For this reason, Esvita does not fit fixed temporary teeth after surgery. Patients receive temporary teeth to wear on social occasions only and leave them out the rest of the time.

“Many patients expect to leave with fixed teeth, so we explain our approach from the first consultation. Keeping the implants free of pressure for about three months lets the bone grow around them without disturbance. Patients wear their temporary teeth when they need to, and the result is a more stable foundation for the final bridge.”

Factors That Affect Bone Healing

  • Bone quality and density at the implant sites
  • Smoking, which slows healing
  • Uncontrolled diabetes and certain medications
  • How closely you follow the soft diet and aftercare instructions

What Can You Eat During All-on-6 Recovery?

A soft diet protects the healing implants and gums. Your dentist will tell you when you can move to firmer foods.

Soft Foods During the Initial Healing Period

In the first days, choose cool or lukewarm soft foods such as yoghurt, smoothies (eaten with a spoon), soups, mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs. Over the following weeks, soft foods such as pasta, fish, porridge and well-cooked vegetables are good choices. Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky or very hot foods.

Gradually Returning to Normal Eating Habits

Because the implants need to heal without pressure, the soft diet continues through the integration period. Once your final bridge is fitted, you can gradually return to a normal diet.

How Should You Care for Your Teeth During All-on-6 Recovery?

Gentle, regular cleaning helps the healing sites stay free of infection. Once your final bridge is fitted, the routine changes, and a guide to cleaning and maintaining implant-supported teeth covers it in detail.

Cleaning Around Healing Implant Sites

Rinse as your dentist instructs, especially after meals. When your dentist allows it, clean the healing areas gently with an extra-soft toothbrush. Clean your temporary teeth after each use.

Following Dentist-Recommended Hygiene Instructions

Every case is slightly different, so follow the written instructions you receive before leaving the clinic. If something is unclear, ask your dental team rather than guessing.

Does All-on-6 Recovery Differ From All-on-4 Recovery?

Recovery is very similar. The All-on-4 and All-on-6 differences are mainly in implant number and placement, not in the healing process. You can read more about All-on-4 treatment on our treatment page.

Similarities in Healing and Aftercare

Both treatments follow the same stages: early gum healing, about three months of osseointegration and then the final bridge. Aftercare, diet and hygiene instructions are largely the same.

How Individual Treatment Plans Affect Recovery

Extractions, bone grafting, treating one or both jaws and your general health can all affect how you feel during recovery. Your dentist will explain what to expect based on your own plan.

What Should International Patients Consider During Recovery?

Planning your trip around the recovery stages makes the process easier. Your travel plans also affect your budget, which is covered in our guide to All-on-6 treatment costs in Turkey.

Follow-Up Appointments and Travel Planning

At Esvita, the first stay is short:

  • One jaw: Esvita hosts you for 2 nights, and all implants are placed in a single day.
  • Both jaws: Esvita hosts you for 3 nights, and each jaw is treated on a separate day.

You then fly home to heal and return to Istanbul about three months later for your final bridge. The second visit lasts 7 days (6 nights), and Esvita hosts you during this stay as well. During this visit, the exact position of each implant is measured with iCam4D photogrammetry, and your permanent bridge is made on a milled titanium bar with zirconia teeth, then fitted.

Continuing Dental Care After Returning to the UK

Follow your aftercare instructions at home. After you return home, your Esvita medical consultant stays in touch with you by WhatsApp and phone. If you would like to speak to your doctor, we can arrange an online meeting. After your final bridge, regular check-ups with a local dentist help maintain your implants over the long term.
